HOW WE STARTED

In early 2004 PebblePlace.com began as a simple web page listing which Leica-R lenses fit Canon EF and EF-s dSLRs. The single web page ran for about a year and when Apple added iWeb to their ’06 iLife suite in late 2005, PebblePlace.com got a make-over and began to look like a real website. For the next year family vacation pictures were added along with other various photographs. In 2006 the first product reviews were added. 2007 marked the introduction of the medium format blog. In 2008 the forums were added along with the Canon 1Ds Mark III blog and new product reviews.

WE ONLY WRITE ABOUT WHAT WE OWN

Many websites reprint industry product releases, firmware announcements and other marketing or advertising releases. PebblePlace.com tries to be different. We write about the equipment we own. If I write about a medium format digital back, a Canon or Nikon dSLR, a Contax or Hasselblad lens or accessory - I have purchased the item and use it just like any other photographer would. Occasionally we write about industry news if it relates to other articles published at PebblePlace.com - such as the Mamiya ZD Digital Back in 2006 & 2007.  For the most part I prefer to write about things where I have firsthand experience.

Only 33% of the PebblePlace.com’s traffic comes from the United States - 67% comes from the U.K., Canada, western European countries, Asia, Australia and western Europe. 60% of the readers spend at least 5 minutes on the site; over 20% spend MORE than 1 hour. Roughly 33% of the traffic comes from returning visitors. Only 3-4% of the traffic comes Google, Yahoo and MSN searches (we are working to improve our standing in search engines). PebblePlace.com is a very “sticky” site, meaning readers stay (or “stick”) on the site for long periods of time, and readers come back often.

Stickiness is an indicator of a site’s informational value. Site with limited content are not “sticky”. Visitors go to the site once, judge the content and usual dismiss such a site. PebblePlace.com strives to provide relevant content - and lots of it. Again, PebblePlace.com is NOT a review site like DPreview.com. Their reviews are outstanding so there is no reason for us, PebblePlace.com, to reinvent the wheel. PebblePlace.com starts where DPreview (and others) end. How did that equipment do in the field? Did we still like XYZ after 1 ro 2 years of use?

CONTAX C/Y AND LEICA R-MOUNT COMPATIBILITY DATABASES

When I first started using Contax and Leica lenses on the Canon 1Ds, most of this information was not available on the web. Hundreds of hours were spent web-searching, posting questions on forums, exchanging emails, reading articles and on-line posts, translating non-english pages, looking for specifications, trying to resolve contradicting information...

Fast forward to 2008 and still, most of this information is fragmented across the web. Since much of the information on PebblePlace.com had to be gathered as part of my own research, it makes sense to publish it for others - and hopefully it will save the next some time. With the help of others via forums and emails, we maintain the data and publish it in the Contax db and Leica db pages.

OUR CONTENT IS FREE

Developing content is expensive and very time consuming - trust me on this! All of the content here is free. No paid reports, no memberships - not even a Paypal “donate” button. To help recover our costs we use Google’s AdSense program. This is a passive income stream which generates revenue when readers click on the Google Ads. PebblePlace.com also participates in several affiliates programs, thus the ads for B&H Photo, Calumet, NewEgg, Apple Store, etc.  Frankly, for the most part these programs have been a bust..., but we keep hoping.
