GEAR TALK - LIFE WITH A CANON 1DS MARK III

Entry #19:  Many, Many, Many Updates!

What Can Brown Do For You?

KEEPING THE UPS DRIVER BUSY

When a new camera is added to the gear bag, usually there is a flurry of lens flipping that soon follows. Different lenses seem to work better with different lenses. For example, I liked the Leica 21-35mm R on the Canon 1Ds, but not so much on the Canon 1Ds Mark II. I have no scientific explanation as to why, but for whatever reason, the Leica 21-35mm rendered with a nicer on contrast on the original 1Ds and looked flat on the 1Ds Mark II.

During the past month I have been busy updated the various lens reviews with images from the Canon 1Ds Mark III. And with those new images and experiences come new thoughts about the lenses. Here some of recent updates:

  1. •Zeiss 50mm F2 Makro-Planar Review:  Several weeks ago the Zeiss 50mm F2 Makro-Planar ZF review was added (click here). Thus far there has not been a sub 100mm lens that has impressed me on the Canon 1Ds Mark III. The Canon 50mm F1.4 was recently sold and a Contax 24-85N has been sitting on the desk. At the end of April I sold a Hasselblad 50mm F2.8 CF to pay for the new Zeiss 50mm Macro-ZF. Thus far the Zeiss 50mm F2 Makro-Planar ZE is delivering some very sharp images. The Zeiss 50mm review also some images from the 1Ds Mark III which have been pushed, pulled and stretched in Photoshop. While the subject matter is pretty dull, the image quality is pretty good and worth a look.

  2. UPDATE - Back in May 2008 the Zeiss 50mm F2 Makro-Planar ZF was exciting stuff. Not anymore. Today we have Zeiss ZE’s in a native Canon EF mount. So here are some more relevant reviews for Canon users:

  3. Zeiss 50mm F2 Makro-Planar ZE

  4. Contax 50mm F1.4 Planar N Auto-Focus (Conurus Converted)

  5. Zeiss 28mm F2 Distagon ZE

  6. •Canon 200mm F2.8 L II Review: The Canon 200mm L F2.8 II review (click here) was also uploaded and has more images from the Canon 1Ds Mark III. Looking at the pictures from the Zeiss 50mm review and the Canon 200mm review, I think those give a pretty good idea of the 1Ds Mark III’s coloring and over “look”.

  7. UPDATE - The Canon review section has grown too and there is alot of new content for Canon users. Here are some other Canon lens reviews with the Canon 1Ds Mark III:

  8. Canon 24-105mm F4 L IS

  9. Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L IS Mark II

  10. Canon 135mm F2 L USM

  11. Canon 200mm F2.8 L USM

  12. •Contax Lens Reviews:  Some of the Contax RTS lens reviews have been updated with images taken on the Canon 1Ds Mark III:

  13. Contax 100mm F2 Planar

  14. Contax 35-135mm F3.3-F4.5 Sonnar-Vario

  15. •More Improvements:  Not finding what you are looking for? Since May 2008 the review section of PebblePlace.com has grown by leaps and bounds. Also the photo gallery section has been completely re-worked with galleries showcasing various lenses. And there is now a search function under the menu on each page. Here are the links for the review section and picture galleries:

So as you probably can tell, I keep the FEDEX, UPS and Post Office delivery staff very busy! There are always small changes and updates to the website and most of them do NOT get noted on the front page. Instead I use the RSS feed for the small stuff. I probably should get a Twitter account or something, but I am always a couple years behind on this stuff. For the latest list of updates:  PebblePlace.com RSS Feed
